Previous title: Observing Atoms with a Scanning Tunneling Microscope
Abstract: Teachers demonstrate the power of scanning tunneling microscope to image individual atoms on a graphite surface. Distances between atoms can be directly measured and provide a quantitative meaning to the “atomic scale.” Further activities include measuring atomic step heights on a gold surface and using computer software to filter noise from images.
